Joye Burton Salver

As the stand-in SWGA Operations member yesterday at the Joye Burton Salver, Sunday Pennant windup day, I couldn’t get over the enthusiasm and excitement of the players as they arrived to play at one of the best courses the region has to offer in the 13th Beach – Beach Course.

These women connect through Pennant and were happy to be mixing it again, this time in a 4BBB competition to win the Joye Burton Salver.  An event like this and a course like this is much appreciated by these weekend women who don’t have a lot of access to golf and are generally restricted to weekends due to work commitments.

With all Sunday Pennant clubs represented, a capacity field of 36 players set off in unusually benign and mild conditions to win the coveted trophy.

A stranded cart on the 6th fairway didn’t deter these players as all but one managed to evade the cart without incident.  Megan Ball from Curlewis was the only one to report the accurate shot hitting the cart in the middle of the fairway.  That says a lot about the accuracy, or not, of these players.

As is the case in most of these events, the locals know the way around.  Lisa Phelps & Lee Donelly from 13th Beach narrowly won with a score of 42 points from Mary Dixon & Helen McKinnon from Anglesea.  The NTP was taken out by Therese Pierce form Lonsdale Links with a fine shot on 7th hole.

As was the enthusiasm of this lot, almost all stayed for the presentations or maybe a drink.  Our SWGA Life Member, Joye Burton on hand and proud to award the trophy to the winners.

Thank you to Lucas & Brad in the Proshop for all of their help and a special thank you to the players who made this event such a success.

The next SWGA event for women is the District Championship, Sunday 2nd August at Anglesea Golf Club. Entries open 8 June.
