SWGA Men’s Championships Round 2026

The District Mens prime event of the SWGA was held at the wonderfully prepared Lonsdale Links GC & Portarlington Golf Clubs on Sunday 12th & 19th July.

In mid- winter, the hardy very well credentialed field of 90 players put their skills, confidence & patience to the test in unfriendly & at times awful weather in the first round at Lonsdale Links. Not all starters were able to withstand “The Punish “of the day. The second and final round was played at Portarlington in contrasting weather conditions with slick greens and manicured fairways.

The Golf:

After round 1, only 5 shots separated the peloton of 10 players from the rest with Mathew Bruce  (QPGC) leading the field with an excellent gross of 72.

David Foster (BVGC) was the only player to beat 70 nett with an impressive 69 from a H/C of 4.

Douglas Hunter (BVGC) playing off H/C 11 had a very tidy 71 nett.

Round 2 and calmer conditions promised a tight finish to this big event.

With the leaderboard turned off and a shotgun start, many good scores were posted with Tom Hyland from Barwon Heads making a run at the lead posting a 75 but it wasn't enough to surpass  Mathew Bruce who posted a 1 under par round to be the wire-to-wire leader and winner with rounds of 72 & 71.

Lonsdale Links local John Anderson lead the Seniors Champs (55yrs +) first round with 79 from Curlewis GC player Kevin Wheeler who returned a tidy 80 gross. John ran out as the Senior Championship winner after a tidy 77 in the second round to take out the title for the second year in a row.

On behalf of all the players thank you to Lonsdale Links & Portarlington or hosting this year's championships.
