2023 Women's Pennant Finals

Sunday morning in May, a well presented, prestigious golf course in overcast, very squally conditions was set to test the best from the South West. A good number of hardy locals & past season pennant players puffered- up to see Torquay Captain & legend Mandy Buckley toss the coin to start the inaugural Womens Final.

To be eligible to participate in the final, players had to play at least 3 games in the division.

LtoR Anna Rothe, Julie Hope-Johnson, Ann Manuel, Annie Seccull, Merran Poole, Jen Warnock, Jenny Carden, Alison Watkins, Anna Jamieson.

The finals in details

Barwon Heads took the point in match 7 with a walk over.

Match 6- Torquay’s pennant veteran Micha Evans started brilliantly, jumping out to an early 4 up lead. Ann Manuell took her time to steady, aided by some fine putting, fighting on till the 18th hole where Micha won 1 up.

Match 5- Wendy Lawson from Torquay was steady as she goes with relentless consistency to good win over Alison Watkins 4/3.

Match 4- Jenni Cottrill played clever, direct golf to rattle the local Bec Bain. The standard was high & Bec was able to find top gear over the middle holes to wear down Jen & win 4/2.

Match 3- Jenny Shultz held a good lead early but the Barwon heads Capt played some amazing come- back golf to take 6 holes on the trot, it was tight down the stretch but Jenny was unable claw back enough after some fine shots to bridge the gap & lost 2 down.

Match 2- Mandy Buckley was undefeated all season but would need her A game to keep the assertive golf of Anna Jamison at bay. Both players handled the cold, strong winds so well the swelling crowds were left shaking their heads. After exchanging short game magic all day Anna dropped a lengthy putt on the 16th to win 3/2.

The large crowd of district supporters were not disappointed with the high standard of play by the women contenders. Even those who came to see the men were locked into the women’s contests for good reason.

Match 1- Torquay’s Kathy Naoumidis was crushing the ball down wind asserting pressure on the seasoned match player Jenny Carden. Jenny was able to keep her nose in front by some fine shot making and killer putting when it was needed and won at the 18th 2 up.

SWGA would like to thank Barwon Heads G.C. Administration, Ground & House staff for hosting this special event. A great day for district golf.
