Irish Day at the Sands
On a typical Victorian, summer day, 116 South Western women braved the rain, wind, sun as well as bunkers on the beautiful, but challenging Torquay Sands course last Monday. The Irish day is traditionally the kick off game on the season’s calendar and its popularity is unsurpassed. The entries were well and fully booked a couple of weeks before the closing date so it is very pleasing to see women’s golf in our district being so strong.
Entries came from Apollo Bay to Lara with 15 clubs being represented.
As usual the Sands was in great condition and some of the women surprised themselves with fabulous scores.

The winners were :
- Ocean Grove’s A grade team, consisting of Kylie Thomas, Colleen Cogger, Sally Schaller, and Kathryn Stevens were the winners overall with a score of 94.
- Runners Up were the local Sands team, consisting of Andrea Harvey, Noelene Bray, Norma Schultz, and Paulette Payne with a score of 91.
- 3rd was Ocean Grove with May Ayers, Emma Harrison, Anne Bernadelle and Robyn Titheridge with a score of 89.
- 4th place consisted of a lovely, mixed representation of clubs with Lynne Perree, (Curlewis ) Kath Fleming and Lou Blomley (Portarlington) and Lynley Doak (Apollo Bay) who came in with a score of 88.
Full scores are available on the Women’s Events Page.
NTP’s were Jan Hourigan (C.S.) on the 5th, ,Jill Pring (Curlewis) on the 7th,
Mary Bennett (B.H.) 13 th and Pam Cameron (O.G.) on the 17th.
Anne Staig, Vice-Captain of The Sands arrived very early at the course to offer help and was quickly seconded to send groups off the tenth so many thanks for all her help. We just can’t do it without those wonderful volunteers from the home clubs.
Many thanks to the wonderful pro shop staff, especially Lachlan and Oscar for all their work with printing cards and preparing the game for smooth sailing. They made our job at S.W. very easy.
Also, of course to Monica and Annie for organising the delicious lunch and being so friendly and accommodating with all the prior preparation.
Our raffle on the day was a mix of donated prizes which raised a very pleasing $600 to go towards our pledge to the Geelong Community Foundation.
